CMR-NCDC Study Confirms No Link Between COVID-19 Vaccines
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) have collaborated to investigate the causes of sudden unexplained deaths, particularly among young adults aged 18 to 45. Two complementary studies were conducted—one analyzing historical data and the other focusing on real-time investigations. The first study, led by ICMR’s National Institute of Epidemiology (NIE), titled “Factors Associated with Unexplained Sudden Deaths Among Adults Aged 18–45 Years in India – A Multicentric Matched Case–Control Study,” was conducted between May and August 2023. It spanned 47 tertiary hospitals across 19 states and Union Territories and examined cases of seemingly healthy individuals who died suddenly between October 2021 and March 2023. The study conclusively found no link between COVID-19 vaccination and sudden unexplained deaths in young adults.

AIIMS-ICMR Study Finds Heart Attacks, Genetics Behind Most Sudden Young Adult Deaths
The second study, titled “Establishing the Cause in Sudden Unexplained Deaths in Young,” is being conducted by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, in collaboration with and funded by ICMR. This prospective study aims to identify the common causes behind sudden deaths in young adults. Preliminary data reveal that heart attacks (myocardial infarction) remain the leading cause of sudden deaths in this age group. Notably, no significant shifts in the pattern of causes have been observed compared to previous years. In many cases, genetic mutations have been identified as a potential factor. The final results will be released upon completion of the study.
Two major studies conducted by ICMR, AIIMS, and NCDC provide a detailed understanding of sudden unexplained deaths among young adults in India. The findings confirm that COVID-19 vaccines do not increase the risk of sudden death. Instead, underlying health conditions, genetic factors, and unhealthy lifestyle habits have emerged as key contributors. These studies offer critical insights for improving awareness, early detection, and prevention of sudden cardiac events in the 18–45 age group.
